Monster Hunt

A browser RPG I designed, built and run end to end. It is live right now, on a server I operate myself.

Catch, breed and trade monsters, fight turn-based battles, run caves and clans. Behind the pixels: a Spring Boot API, a Vue and Phaser client, PostgreSQL, Redis and WebSockets. This is the kind of system I build, and keep running.

Experience

Alliance Abroad Platform Engineer
Jun 2026 – Present · Cape Town
  • Built and hardened the Alliance MCP Gateway, including its Asana connector, and a fleet of Vertex agents with a self-healing detect-fix-verify loop
  • Running an AI pod within an AI-first organisation — using Claude Code and autonomous agents for day-to-day delivery
  • Rewrote the internal agent standard to route GitHub, Asana, and Teams integrations through the gateway
  • Built autonomous PR-review and promotion agents that gate merges and move builds dev → QA → prod under a shared lock so two promotions cannot collide
  • Built a docs agent that reads merged code and opens doc PRs that auto-merge; when it cannot map a change to a page it raises an alert instead of guessing
  • Built a branching sandbox of the gateway so risky changes are tested in an isolated copy before touching prod
  • Led delivery across the Globus Back Office portal — rules engine, RBAC, queue system, reference-step engine migration
  • Rebuilt the Participant Portal from greenfield — dashboard, passport OCR auto-fill, perf work (shared cache, prefetch) — while maintaining the legacy portal through cutover
  • Migrated the Host Portal's invite-accept flow from Auth0 to Keycloak, rebuilt its dev DB, and stood up its CI/CD pipeline
  • Shipped dual Google/Entra SSO across the portals
  • Stood up QA and PROD environments in GCP, including a net-new Terraform rebuild of the QA environment, its CI/CD triggers, and storage buckets
  • Drove config-as-code parity between the repo and live QA/prod, with drift checks
  • Maintained the shared form engine and internal docs hub used across both portals, and automated the form engine release chain: a tagged publish auto-opens version-bump PRs in every consumer portal
  • Built the tech request portal that routes internal requests to the right board, with safety gates such as freeze windows
  • Enforced a dedicated E2E bot-account strategy per environment so nobody tests with real users' accounts
  • Led behavior-preserving refactors of 1,000+ line modules, proving no change by diffing full-suite results and coverage before and after
  • Rebuilt OCR/translation cluster networking and backfilled CI/CD deploy workflows across a long tail of smaller repos
  • Own platform health — monitoring, environment protection, branching rules, PR review across the team, and the relationship with the external contracting team
  • Standing in for CTO while on leave
